SPEAK will be exhibiting and presenting at AR2006 (click on banner above to find out more about this annual conference).
The following topics will be presented by some of our SPEAKers. We hope to see you there!
Animal Rights and the Law
Joe Gaziano
This talk will attempt to answer the question: can animal rights goals be achieved through the legislative process? The talk will address: the difference between animal rights laws and animal welfare laws, the criteria needed to develop animal rights legislation, the difficulties associated with attempting to pass animal legislation, and the potential for success.
Meditation for Activists
Joe Gaziano
Start your day with mindfulness meditation! If you have ever felt burnt out working for animals, or upset in trying to defend your views about animal rights to co-workers and family, meditation can help you recharge your batteries, learn to cope, and energize your life.
In this session activists will learn techniques to carry them through the day and how to handle stressful situations that arise in their lives. Participants will gain skills in slowing down and connecting with their inner selves, become more centered, and handle unpleasant emotions.
Each session will begin with instructions for beginners, followed by a meditation session. Questions and comments will follow each session. Whether you are a seasoned meditator or a beginner, all are welcome.
What Brings People to the Animal Rights Movement
Jacquie Lewis
This presentation will explain the types of life experiences that contribute to empathy toward animals. This research was conducted by surveying animal rights activists at AR2004. The findings are particularly valuable for humane educators and parents.
The Emotional Intelligence of Companion Animals
Jacquie Lewis
Some scientists now believe that animals have emotions, intelligence, altruism, and personality. To animal rights activists this is nothing new. Discover what the latest research shows about the mind and emotions of dogs and cats. This presentation will also focus on the mental and emotional lives of rabbits and the recent research on the intelligence of birds. A video clip will demonstrate the abilities of one very unusual bird.
